Frequently Asked Questions
What is the J-1 Visa?
The J-1 visa is a U.S. non-immigrant visa for individuals approved to participate in exchange visitor programs that promote cultural exchange, and offers training and experience.
What role does a J-1 visa sponsor play?
Sponsors are U.S. government-designated organizations that screen applicants, issue the DS-2019 form (Certificate of Eligibility), provide program guidance, and ensure compliance with program rules. Without a sponsor, you cannot apply for a J-1 visa.
Which J-1 Intern and Trainee sectors are available in the US?
- Hospitality and Tourism
- Management, Business, Commerce and Finance
- Information Media and Communications
- The Sciences, Engineering, Architecture, Mathematics and Industrial Occupations
- Arts and Culture
- Education, Social Sciences, Library Science, Counselling & Social Services
- Public Administration and Law
What is Form DS-2019 and why is it important?
The DS-2019 is the Certificate of Eligibility issued by your sponsor.
You need it to:
- Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee,
- Book your embassy/consulate visa interview,
- Enter the U.S. for your program.
How long can I stay in the U.S. on a J-1 visa?
It depends on your program category. For example:
- Interns: up to 12 months
- Trainees: up to 18 months
Can I bring my family with me?
Yes. Your spouse and unmarried children under 21 can apply for J-2 dependent visas. J-2 holders can study, and may apply for work authorization after arriving in the U.S.
Do I need health insurance?
Yes. The U.S. Department of State requires all J-1 (and J-2) visa holders to have medical insurance that meets specific minimum coverage requirements for the entire program duration.
What happens if I want to change my host company or program?
You must first get approval from your sponsor. Changing without authorization can cause your SEVIS record to be terminated and your visa status lost.
What should I do if my visa is denied?
The consular officer will explain the reason for denial. You may be able to reapply, but often you must fix the issue (missing documents, funding proof, ties to home country, etc.) before re-submission.
Can I travel outside the U.S. during my J-1 program?
Yes, if your DS-2019 and visa are valid and your sponsor has signed your DS-2019 for travel. Always check with your sponsor before leaving.
